Students Explore Local Marine Wildlife on Shoal Harbour Cruises

On April 28, approximately 90 students from Parkland Secondary School and North Saanich Middle School had the opportunity to experience local marine wildlife firsthand during two educational cruises organized by the Friends of Shoal Harbour.

The cruises, generously provided by Eagle Wing Tours, took students through the Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary and the Sidney Channel Important Bird Area—two ecologically significant marine environments in the region.

Throughout the journey, Eagle Wing’s knowledgeable naturalists offered engaging commentary, helping students identify seabirds and other marine wildlife while learning about the importance of protecting these habitats.

For many students, the experience provided a unique chance to connect classroom learning with the natural world around them, deepening their understanding of local ecosystems and the role they play in conservation.

The Friends of Shoal Harbour continue to support opportunities like this, helping to inspire the next generation of stewards for the region’s rich coastal environment.
